The benefits of omega-3 fatty acids from fish have been long known. However, in recent years, scientists have discovered several new reasons to spotlight this amazing nutrient. These important new studies show: |
| Omega-3 Oil Reduces Risk of Depression. In countries where fish consumption is high, it’s been observed that depression rates are lower than in countries where fish consumption is low. Then, in 1999, two studies confirmed that an important relationship exists between omega-3 fatty acids and mental health.
Psychiatry Research published findings that showed depressed subjects appear to have a fatty acid imbalance in their system. The research suggested that depression could be overcome with omega-3 supplementation. Omega-3 Oil Provides Help for Bi-Polar Disorder.
Omega-3 Oil Reduces Risk of Cancer. In the July 1999 issue of the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, they published the exciting findings of some Spanish researchers. After studying more than 18,000 participants, researchers concluded that more consumption of fish rich in omega-3 fatty acids was associated with a lower risk of cancer of the colon, esophagus, stomach, rectum, and pancreas. Omega-3 Oil Benefits Pregnant/Nursing Women. According to a recent article in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, research shows that certain fats, particularly the DHA in omega-3's, significantly improved visual skills of both premature and full term babies. The study showed that higher levels of DHA inutero and while nursing exclusively for the first four to six months improved infants "stereoacuity" - visual depth perception - over their bottle-fed counterparts. As published in the British Medical Journal (Vol 324, p447), researchers at the Staten Serum Institute in Copenhagen found that low birth weight and premature births decreased with increased fish consumption. This study corroborates earlier studies linking higher birth weights and longer pregnancies among women living in fish eating communities in the Faroe Islands. Other similar studies showed a lower rate of premature birth among pregnant women taking fish oil supplements. (Note: premature birth of babies is associated with an increased risk of death.) Currently, the American Heart Association recommends that adults eat at least two servings of fish each week. As further support for this recommendation, a growing body of research has shown that fish - especially fatty fish such as salmon, tuna and sardines - that contain omega-3 fatty acids have protective effects on the cardiovascular system. Researchers have found that these substances can lower the risk of developing an irregular heart rhythm and blood clots, and can reduce levels of fat in the blood known as triglycerides - all risk factors for heart disease. Omega-3 Oil Reduces Cardiovascular Death in Men. Research from the US National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI) suggests that daily intake of 0.5 to 1.0 grams of Omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA could reduce risk of cardiovascular death in middle aged men by 40 percent.
